I decided to read this book after seeing the mini series on ABC news. It was a quick read, it didn't delve too deeply into the Madoff story but it satisified my curiosity. Madoff appears to have truly been a man without any empathy or conscience. He knowingly swindled friends, charity's, widows and widowers alike. And that was his plan from the beginning. Rather than a story of a fund manager who made bad bets and desperately tried to keep the fund afloat in order to earn back the money he had lost, Ross asserts that from the beginning, Madoff NEVER made a single trade with the money under his management. In addition to ruining the lives of his investors, he destroyed his family. His sons never talked to their mother after turning Madoff in, one son committed suicide 2 years to the day that he turned his father in to the FBI and the other son died of cancer. Family members were sent to jail although notably Ruth his wife nor his sons went to jail. Federal investigators doubt the fullness and validity of his "cooperation" after arrest but were still able to make cases against key co conspirators in his organization.A cautionary tale for investors who may believe they have found an investent "too good to be true" , (12 to 20% ) returns year after year even in down markets. If it's too good to be true , it probably isn't true.
"The Madoff Chronicles" is an excellent analysis of the Madoff Ponzi Scheme. Rather than try to tell Madoff's life story, it tells the story of the fraud itself. This piece largely succeeds in explaining various dimensions of the fraud, from its essential nature, its effects on the Madoff family, the reasons that Madoff was able to attract so many investors, and the aftermath. This is an engrossing read that I found impossible to put down. This piece, unlike some others, seems skeptical that the rest of the Madoff clan did not know that he was operating a Ponzi Scheme instead of a legitimate hedge fund. I completely agree with the author. The notion that Ruth, and above all, his two sons, did not know about the fraud is nonsense. They had to have known. More likely Madoff took the fall for his sons, giving them a pretext of deniability. What is indisputable is that the Madoff family lived a life of incredible luxury that is almost unimaginable. And why not? Whenever the Madoffs wanted money, which was often, they simply took their investors' funds, which funds were never invested at all, just kept in the bank for the use of the Madoffs and the odd investor redemption. The SEC will likely never live down its failure to detect and put a stop to the Madoff fraud. (I am a civil attorney and have brought suit against numerous Ponzi Schemes. Generally you can spot one in about a minute by the uniform returns of over about ten percent. I've never been wrong yet applying this rule. That the SEC missed this for decades, despite several warnings, is inconceivable--the Madoff scam fit right into this rule.) Madoff's fraud ended only as a result of the 2008 financial crisis. When many of his investors sought to redeem their accounts, there was no money, and the whole house of cards came crashing down. No thanks to the SEC.The securities industry will be years in adjusting to the weaknesses and failures in the system that the Madoff fraud revealed. This piece provides a valuable insight into the problems that somehow we must solve. Highly recommended. RJB.
Written by Brian Ross (ABC News correspondent), this book chronicled Bernie Madoff's rise and fall of his multi BILLION-dollar fraudulent investment firm. I don't know how Ross got Madoff's inner circle to talk to him (i.e. Madoff's long-time secretary, his former messenger who delivered far more than just office mails, the security guard who watched over Madoff when he was under house arrest and became his confidant, and many others.) The book showed an interesting insight into his life and that of his wife, Ruth, a childhood sweetheart when they were both living in Laurelton, Queens. Madoff created an extravagant lifestyle that was made possible by stealing money from his close friends and strangers alike. Madoff's sheer chutzpah of how he got so many people to give him MILLIONS to "invest", and how he got away with it for so long, is utterly breathtaking in its depth of deceit. You might ask "where was SEC in all this? Weren't they supposed to protect the investors' money?" Well, you need to read this book to find out. (I don't know if anyone from SEC was arrested, but some people from that dept definitely should.)This book was published in 2009, so it's bit dated, but it covers all the sordid detail of this heartbreaking white-collar crime to Madoff's many victims. It was well written and very easy to read. I enjoyed it.
If true crime and this one in particular is of interest, you will not be disappointed with this book. The arrogance, sociopathic actions and ability of the perpetrator to maintain his ruse for decades would make the stuff of novels ... which no one would believe. Yet, an icon in multiple communities was at the seat of a vicious Ponzi scheme for much, much longer than the average two-year life of such a scam. His total lack of remorse is consistent with all of his actions. His wife's sole remorse substantiates the notion that they were soul mates.I found that putting down was a near-impossibility!
Like a lot of people I really didn't know a thing about Madoff. This book brings Madoff and his crimes that destroyed so many to life. But no small number of these cases appeared to be people with way too damned much money to begin with who got into this situation because of their never ending greed. Madoff belonged behind bars some 30 years ago and there were many who knew he was dirty, but because of the failure of another one of our governmental agencies designed to protect the public, it never happened!
Well written book about the Madoff scheme. It is presented from the viewpoints of the different players: Madoff, the investors, the SEC, the family, etc. The book reminds me of the TV show "American Greed". If you enjoy that show, you will probably enjoy this book.
